Y4 Discovery/Saturn V

Welcome to Discovery and Saturn V!

Welcome to the page for Y4! You have reached the most exciting year group in school! This year we test your courage in our 'Only the Brave' topic. Later, we will take you on a magical trip back to Ancient Egypt where you will bring history to life by constructing your very own burial chamber for our school Pharaoh, TutanTombling, in our 'Sands of Time ' project. Finally, are you ready to test your mettle against our 'Roaming Romans'?

 

Autumn Term - Only the Brave  

 

Get ready to don your life belt and jump in at the deep end.  We will take you on an immersive trip around the amazing sights and sounds of Whitby.

 

English - We will be linking our English lessons to our topic lessons.  This will include writing recounts about the trip to Whitby and narratives.

Science - Our topics for Autumn are habitats, electricity and sound.

History - We will be learning the skills to become effective historians.

Geography - We will develop our map skills and look at human and physical features around Whitby.

Computing - Internet safety and website design

Art - Beach art and the work of local Whitby artist Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.

DT - Designing a lighthouse and a lantern.

RE - We will be attempting to answer theological questions such as "Why are some times special?" "What can we learn from the lives of significant people of faith?"

Music - We will be learning ship related songs.

PE - Invasion games and gymnastics.

Languages - Our children will be learning French this year.

 

Spring Term - Sands of Time

 

English - We will be linking our English lessons to our topic lessons.  This will include writing narrative set in the past.

Science - Our topics for Spring will be exploring states of matter and habitats. 

History - We will be learning the skills to become effective historians.

Geography - We will develop our map skills and look at human and physical features of Egypt.

Computing - Internet safety presenting information.

Art - Developing water colour painting skills. Using clay to make objects.

DT - Bread making

RE - We will be exploring Hinduism.

Music - We will be learning Egyptian related songs.

PE - Net games and Orienteering.

Languages - Our children will be learning French this year.

 

Summer Term - Roaming Romans

 

Our final topic will see us return to Britain and explore the impact of Roman invasion and rule.  

 

English - We will be linking our English lessons to our topic lessons.  This will include writing recount and newspaper text.

Science - Our topic for the summer is animals including humans which will take us on a journey through the digestive system of a Roman.  

History - We will be investigating the impact of the Roman empire on the people and landscape of Britain.

Geography - We will explore the location of countries invaded by Rome and how Roman influenced towns developed in Britain.

Computing - Internet safety.   Online mosaic making.  Presenting information.

Art - Making a vindolander tablet.

DT - Roman armour and shield making.  Explore the design of Roman chariots.

RE - We will be exploring Buddhism.

Music - We will be developing our knowledge of Rome through song.

PE - Athletics and gladiator activities.

Languages - Our children will be learning French this year.

Important Information and Key Dates:

PE Days - Monday and Friday

(We advise you to bring your kit in on Monday and take it home on Friday)

Doors open at 8.45am in Stars - Y4 use the Y3/Y4 door.

Pupils' clothing should be labelled with their name and class to enable items to be easily returned.

No mobile phones in school.

Homework is given out on a Friday and handed in the following Wednesday.

Please see Optional Homework sheets for homework linked to Topic - pupils are encouraged to involve people at home with the optional homework tasks.
