Wilthorpe Primary School Aim high and never give up

Letter from Mr Tombling to Years 5 and 6

Thursday 15th November

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers of Children in Year 5 and 6

It was brought to my attention over Parent’s Evenings that there has been a growing number of children congregating in Wilthorpe Park well before school starts and on occasion a group of these children have been intimidating others. I visited the park myself this morning and at 8:15am there were 15 year 5 and 6 pupils already gathering together, all unsupervised. I am very aware that many of you will be trying to develop independence in your children and that many of you will also need to get to work on a morning, however I do have issues regarding this matter.

The school doors open at 8:45am and school begins at 9:00am, there is no need for the children to be in the vicinity of school, in some cases, as early as 8:00am. The instances of intimidation are brought into school by the children which impacts upon their learning as they are distracted and concerned by what has happened and takes up adult time in school. There is also the danger of a child hurting themselves in the park and there is no quick access to an adult for support or first aid.

I am well aware that as parents and carers it is your choice on what you do with your children before school, but I must stress that I do have concerns about children being left alone for so long without any supervision at hand.

Please can I request that, where possible, children are not sent to school before 8:30am. Where this is not possible please can I recommend you take advantage of using the school breakfast club which is open from 8.00am. Children can also access the club themselves from 8.30am for a cost of £1.50 paid on the day, no need to book.

Thank you for your anticipated support with this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mr Tombling
